The microbial metabolism of organic matter (OM) in seagrass beds can create sulfidic conditions detrimental to seagrass growth; iron (Fe) potentially has ameliorating effects through titration of the sulfides and the precipitation of iron-sulfide minerals into the sediment. In this study, the biogeochemical effects of Fe availability and its interplay with sulfur and OM on sulfide toxicity, phosphorous (P) availability, seagrass growth and community structure were tested. The availability of Fe and OM was manipulated in a 2 × 2 factorial experiment arranged in a Latin square, with four replicates per treatment. The treatments included the addition of Fe, the addition of OM, the addition of both Fe and OM as well as no addition. The experiment was conducted in an oligotrophic, iron-deficient seagrass bed. Fe had an 84.5% retention efficiency in the sediments with the concentration of Fe increasing in the seagrass leaves over the course of the experiment. Porewater chemistry was significantly altered with a dramatic decrease in sulfide levels in Fe addition plots while sulfide levels increased in the OM addition treatments. Phosphorus increased in seagrass leaves collected in the Fe addition plots. Decreased sulfide stress was evidenced by heavier δ34S in leaves and rhizomes from plots to which Fe was added. The OM addition negatively affected seagrass growth but increased P availability; the reduced sulfide stress in Fe added plots resulted in elevated productivity. Fe availability may be an important determinant of the impact that OM has on seagrass vitality in carbonate sediments vegetated with seagrasses.  相似文献

 Radiolytic reduction at 77 K of oxo-/hydroxo-bridged dinuclear iron(III) complexes in frozen solutions forms kinetically stabilized, mixed-valent species in high yields that model the mixed-valent sites of non-heme, diiron proteins. The mixed-valent species trapped at 77 K retain ligation geometry similar to the initial diferric clusters. The shapes of the mixed-valent EPR signals depend strongly on the bridging ligands. Spectra of the Fe(II)OFe(III) species reveal an S=1/2 ground state with small g-anisotropy as characterized by the uniaxial component (g z g av /2<0.03) observable at temperatures as high as ∼100 K. In contrast, hydroxo-bridged mixed-valent species are characterized by large g-anisotropy (g z g av /2>0.03) and are observable only below 30 K. Annealing at higher temperatures causes structural relaxation and changes in the EPR characteristics. EPR spectral properties allow the oxo- and hydroxo-bridged, mixed-valent diiron centers to be distinguished from each other and can help characterize the structure of mixed-valent centers in proteins. Fumarase-free electron particles from Propionibacterium freudenreichii and P. pentosaceum were prepared by discontinuous sucrose gradient centrifugation, and the influence of 2-n-heptyl-4-hydroxy-quinoline-N-oxide (HQNO) and ultraviolet irradiation on the reduction of menaquinone and cytochrome b with l-lactate or glycerol-3-phosphate and the reoxidation by fumarate was studied. In the presence of HQNO the steady state reduction level of menaquinone during fumarate reduction was increased whereas the steady state reduction level of cytochrome b was decreased as compared with the reduction levels measured in the absence of HQNO. The steady state reduction level of menaquinone during electron transport to fumarate was not influenced by ultraviolet irradiation and the steady state reduction level of cytochrome b was decreased at increasing irradiation times. In the past few decades, major advances in environmental protection within the coating application industry have been made. In spite of this technological progress, approximately 50% of industrial-solvent emissions still come from the paint-application sector. The advances made in reducing emissions for plants requiring licensing have unfortunately had no influence on the environmental efforts of smaller companies. Solvent-reduced painting systems, such as high-solid paints, water-based coating, and powder coating have not been able to achieve acceptance, nor have innovative application technologies. The principal arguments against a conversion to these ecologically more favorable alternatives were related to cost and quality.
Recently, the EU Solvent Directive (1999/13/EC) went into effect, aiming to significantly reduce industrial-solvent emissions. Up until this point, however, instruments enabling smaller companies to determine their solvent emissions and to simultaneously develop process-improvement potentials while keeping costs in mind have been missing.
Using the mass and energy flow-management approach, cost structures and environmental benefits can be made transparent to the entrepreneur. The primary result of the research projects presented here is the computer-based mass and energy flow model called the individual computer-aided mass and energy flow model for the vehicle-refinishing sector (IMPROVE). It can be used as a detailed business-consultancy tool. Based upon this, practical guidelines were developed for easy orientation and activity planning. They can be used by companies to help them fulfill the requirements of environmental legislation and to display the benefits that can be achieved by various emission-reduction measures.  相似文献

ABSTRACT.   Recordings of avian vocal signals in natural habitats include ambient noise. Often this background noise corrupts across all frequencies and is of substantial amplitude. Reducing this ambient noise to prepare vocal signals for playback stimuli or to remove habitat-specific noise signatures prior to analyzing a signal's acoustic characteristics can be useful. We conducted experimental evaluations of three noise reduction procedures to determine their effectiveness. We embedded two bird vocalizations ("clean" signals) in four kinds of natural noise, resulting in eight noise-signal combinations. We then applied three noise reduction procedures (Noise Profile, Band Pass, and Noise Estimate) to each of the embedded signals and compared the recovered signals to the original (clean) signals. Noise Profile filtering was effective in reducing noise and returning fairly high-quality signals from even severe levels of masking noise. The other two noise reduction procedures did not perform as well. For the two most corrupting maskers, however, Noise Profile filtering also altered the signal properties by reducing signal amplitude at those frequencies containing high levels of noise. Apart from this loss of amplitude, the quantitative features of the filtered signals were similar to those of the original model sounds. We conclude that Noise Profile filtering produces good results for cases where noise is approximately constant over the signal duration and the signal intensity exceeds noise intensity over the frequencies of interest.  相似文献

There is considerable interest in the chemistry of Mn in acidic waters because of its role in the generation of acid neutralizing capacity during reduction processes, as an adsorbent in element cycling, and as a potential toxicant to aquatic organisms. Temporal and spatial variations in the concentration of Mn were evident in acidic Dart's Lake (1.0–2.3 mol l–1), located in the Adirondack Region of New York. Seasonal changes in pH and dissolved oxygen concentration had subtle effects on the chemistry and transport of Mn. Despite oversaturation with respect to the solubility of manganite during periods of stratification, vertical deposition of Mn was minimal. The conservative nature of Mn appears to be due to the acidic conditions in Dart's Lake.  相似文献

Suspension-cultured cells of sugarcane (Saccharum sp. hybrids) did not oxidize exogenously supplied NADH in the absence of ferricyanide (potassium hexacyanoferrate [III]), whereas they did at a low rate in the presence of ferricyanide. Concomitantly, ferricyanide was reduced at a slow rate. Neither a pH change nor a change in respiration was caused by the addition of NADH and-or ferricyanide, but ferricyanide was a strong inhibitor of sugar transport. In contrast to cells, protoplasts rapidly oxidized exogenous NADH. This oxidation was accompanied by an increase in oxygen consumption and a net proton disappearance from the medium. Exogenous ferricyanide was reduced only slowly by protoplasts. Simultaneous presence of NADH and ferricyanide produced two effects: 1) a very rapid stoichiometric oxidation of NADH and reduction of ferricyanide until one of the reaction compounds was exhausted, and 2) a nearly instantaneous inhibition of the slower phase of NADH oxidation, which was observed in the presence of NADH but absence of ferricyanide. The extra oxygen consumption and the alkalinization of the medium, as observed with NADH, were also immediately stopped by ferric ions and ferrous ions. The presence of NADH and ferricyanide caused a fast stoichiometric acidification of the medium. These results were taken as evidence that the oxidation of NADH in the absence of ferricyanide is not related to the NADH-ferricyanide-coupled redox reaction. Furthermore, addition of NADH caused some uncoupling of the protoplasts, an effect which would explain the strong acidification of the cell cytoplasm and the inhibition of various transport systems. The NADH-oxidizing systems oxidized both the -configurated pyridine nucleotide and the -configurated form. Since NADH-linked dehydrogenases usually do not work with -NADH (with the exception of the endoplasmic-reticulum-bound electron-transport system), the observed activities could have been derived from contaminating membranes and dying protoplasts in the suspension. All reported reactions partly or predominantly occurred in the supernatant of the protoplast suspension and increased considerably during incubation of the protoplasts. The rates and quantities of oxygen consumption, pH change, and ferricyanide reduction fitted with NADH oxidation in a stoichiometric ratio, which implied that all these reactions occurred in the extracellular space, without involving transmembrane steps. The nitrate reductase (NR, EC 1.6.6.1) activity in root nodules formed by hydrogenase positive (Hup+) and hydrogenase negative (Hup) Rhizobium leguminosarum strains was examined in symbioses with the pea cultivar Alaska ( Pisum sativum L.), Rates of activity were determined by the in vivo assay in nodules from plants that were only N2-dependent or grown in the presence of 2 m M KNO3. The rates varied widely among strains, regardless of the Hup phenotype of the R. leguminosarum strain used for inoculation, but the overall results indicated that nodules formed by Hup strains accumulated more nitrite in the incubation medium than did those with Hup phenotypes. Total plant dry weight and reduced nitrogen content of pea plants grown in the presence of 2 m M KNO3 and inoculated with single Hup+ and Hup R. leguminosarum strains were statistically different among some strains. These observations suggest that the possible advantages derived from the presence of the Hup system on whole plant growth may be counteracted by the higher rates of NR activity in the Hup strains in the R. leguminosarum -pea symbiosis.  相似文献
